Edfu Temple

Ater leaving Kom Ombo Temple we drove to Edfu Temple. Though the temple itself is noted for being one of the best preserved in Egypt, it's artwork is not. When the Christians conquered Egypt, they thought it was terrible that the Egyptians worshiped other gods. The resolution: They found all pictures of all gods in the temple and hammered out their faces, arms and legs. Some pictures that were at that time burried in stand are still in good condition today, but most of the pictures are destroyed. I found this really striking and am a little upset that I did not take the time to get a picture that showed what the destroyed work looks like.

The Temple of Edfu is an ancient Egyptian temple located on the west bank of the Nile in the city of Edfu which was known in Greco-Roman times as Apollonopolis Magna, after the chief god Horus-Apollo. It is the second largest temple in Egypt after Karnak and one of the best preserved. The temple, dedicated to the falcon god Horus, was built in the Ptolemaic period between 237 and 57 BCE. The inscriptions on its walls provide important information on language, myth and religion during the Greco-Roman period in ancient Egypt. In particular, the Temple's inscribed building texts "provide details [both] of its construction, and also preserve information about the mythical interpretation of this and all other temples as the Island of Creation." There are also "important scenes and inscriptions of the Sacred Drama which related the age-old conflict between Horus and Seth." (Copied and pasted from Wikipedia).

yep... Egyptians did it too ;)

If you lookclosely here a few feet above my head on the wall behind me, you can see the legs of the god look as though they had spike heald against them and were hammered to remove all fine details
